This is totally not directed at anyone or anything in particular. But I've seen a couple of 4.14 codas that got me to thinking.
I hate apology/grovel!fic. It was rampant in some corners of the Sentinel fandom back in the day, with Jim groveling all over the place, either because of Sentinel, Too or The Sentinel by Blair Sandburg. Because big, bad Jim was so mean to poor, widdle Blair, and it drove me nuts. I get it. Fans get angry at a character and then make themselves feel better by writing a story and making that character grovel for forgiveness at the feet of the wronged character. It annoys the crap out of me.
A long time ago, I read an analysis of the different types of characters/roles in fandom. It's very foggy in my brain, but I remember this person talking about how every fandom has its bad guys and its Black Hats. The difference is, the bad guy is the common enemy and the Black Hat is the supposed good guy that everyone hates. There was some kind of LoTRps example involving Sean Astin and homophobia, but I had no idea what they were talking about, so that part is all kind of vague.
Their other example, however, was popslash. Lou was the bad guy, and Justin was the Black Hat. And it's true. I'm not kidding, if I had a nickel for every grovel!fic I read from 2002-2005, I'd be able to bail out the banking industry myself. Justin was always in the wrong, always apologizing to the others, especially poor, defenseless JC, always having to be shown the error of his ways in single-handedly DESTROYING NSYNC!
And it's one of my fanfic pet peeves, and I don't want to see a bunch of stories where Sam apologizes/grovels to Dean for what's going on at this point in the season. It's a story arc, people, and there will be resolution. Take a deep breath and relax and enjoy the ride.
And, really, I'm just bitching at the ambient air, not at anyone who's actually reading this.
Oops, Erin and Magil just came in. I completely forgot she was coming home this weekend. I am officially a bad mother.
