So this morning I went off to run the 'Burgh Pizza and Wings 10K, and it didn't go as well as I'd hoped. I ran a couple of miles on the treadmill before I left, just to get warmed up. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm running 1 mile or 20, the first mile kills me, and I never feel comfortable until mile 2 or 3, so I wanted to get that out of the way.
Anyway, I felt awesome, and then I proceeded to get lost. I could not find that stupid race to save my life. The 10K started at 10, and I finally got there around 9:40. I had to park about a quarter of a mile away from the registration tent and start line, so I ran to the tent, got my packet, ran back to put everything in the car, and ran to the start line with 2 minutes to spare. I saw my friend Merri just finished the 5K, and she said she'd see me after my race. She was there with her mom and sisters, and there was tons of food and beer, so I hoped she wouldn't get too bored.
It was hot at the start, and I was already sweating, having already run almost a mile around the parking lot, but mostly I felt fine. And then the race started and bam, it was like I had run out of gas. By mile two I had to quit, because I realized I was having an exercise-induced asthma attack. I could not get any air, and was wheezing all over the place. There were volunteers at the mile marker, and they called the EMS folks on their bikes, and in about fifteen minutes I was fine. One of the volunteers drove me back to the food, and I sat with Merri and her family and drank a beer and ate some wings and was fine.
Well, not fine, but okay. I'm still a little wheezy. And I have that whole "I just ran almost five miles and I have all this energy" thing, but I feel like I ran really ran 20 miles. So I'm restless, but worn out.
And seriously, WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK? One or two other times I've felt a little wheezy after a race, but never during and never this bad. I don't have asthma, I don't have hay fever, I don't have allergies.
And there were totally people there that I could have beat, and I wouldn't have finished last, and I would have so gotten a medal. Dammit.
I wonder if I should to see my doctor and get an inhaler in case it happens during the half marathon next Sunday? (She'll just tell me to quit running.) I wonder what the pollen count will be in Cincinnati next weekend?
On the plus side, the paramedics didn't believe me when they asked my age and I told them.
