Between the hockey game and the fact that Colleen arrived right at 9pm and we spent the next hour talking, mostly about what an idiot my son is, I only saw bits and pieces of SPN last night. I liked what I saw and need to find time today to watch the whole thing.
I've been listening totoo much a lot of hockey radio today, and I have Thoughts.
I'm glad Raffi Torres got a big suspension, and one would hope it'll make the players still left in the playoffs think twice, although I kind of doubt it.
But here's the thing. I love the Penguins and want the t o win. And James Neal's skates left the ice last Sunday - he should be out for the rest of the playoffs. Your skates leave the ice, you're out for the duration.
I'm delighted that Philly's defense is wearing down, but I hate that Grossman is out because Geno threw an elbow. (However, Ashram didn't crosscheck anybody in the throat and I wish people would stop saying that he did. It was a stupid move, though, and I'm fine with his four games and would have no problem if it had been more.)
I guess I'm saying that the skilled, highly paid players should be held just as accountable as the fourth liners and enforcers. Yes, even Duncan Keith. (That would also help with the whole "The Penguins get off easy because Bettman has a boner for Sid" stuff.) And whether someone is injured or not shouldn't be the point.
That said, targeting the head of someone who's already had a concussion is particularly egregious. Carl Hagelin should be out of the playoffs for his hit on Daniel Alfredsson.
Any head hit - out.
I also think the Players Association has a bit of a conflict of interest, which is probably why they're so quiet on the subject. They have to represent Torres, but they should also be representing Marian Hossa.
And something that was a penalty in the first period should still be one in the third. I liked the way the officials called the Pens/Flyers game Wednesday night, nice and tight. Not so much last night, and Brooks Orpik should be grateful for that.
And Jonathan Toews continues to be a model of composure and integrity.
Okay, enough of that. It's time for the Caps and Bruins. Speaking of which, watch the hits between Ovechkin and Chara. Big, enormous hits between two freight trains, not head shots.
And now I have three hours to go for a run, pack for Seattle, go to the store, give Nev a bath, and watch some hockey, before taking my hopefully future daughter-in-law out for dinner.
