The Minor Fall and the Major Lift, Master Post

Fic title: The Minor Fall and the Major Lift
Artist name: [livejournal.com profile] feyuca
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Rating: R
Word count: 26,200
Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers for "All Hell Breaks Loose 1&2." Character death, obviously.

Summary: When Sam dies bloody in the mud at Cold Oak, he faces a choice. His soul can move on to wherever it is souls go, or he can stay and try to help his brother deal. Sam refuses to leave Dean alone with his grief and so he stays, hoping his presence will ease Dean's pain. There's really nothing that can do that, though, and Sam's unseen presence only makes things worse. Then Dean goes and finds himself a crossroads demon.

Link to art: Here. It's gorgeous and she was a delight to work with.

Author's notes: I've been wanting to write this story since I saw a comment [livejournal.com profile] dotfic made in her episode review of "Death Takes a Holiday." What if this is what happens to Sam at Cold Oak? A reaper comes to collect him, but Sam's soul takes one look at a grieving Dean and refuses to go. He lingers and hovers over Dean, his proximity worsening the grief until Dean can't stand it so much he goes and makes the crossroads deal. Sam pops back into his body and can't remember what he's done. She graciously gave me permission to use her idea, and I hope this story does it justice.

Dialogue from All Hell Breaks Lose 2 is included in this story.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] topaz119, who always listens and encourages. Enormous thanks to [livejournal.com profile] without_me, who helped me corral my rampant serial commas and unnecessary wordiness.

Thanks also to [livejournal.com profile] annkiri for the wonderful and helpful beta.

And of course, Ashley, who got everything I was trying to say about the story I was trying to tell.

Title from Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. Quotes from the King James Bible and the Beatles.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] wendy and [livejournal.com profile] thehighwaywoman are completely awesome.
