We haven't done anything to our house in...a lot of years. For various reasons, except for routine stuff like the furnaces and a new roof, we've just kind of let things go. So we got all energized this year and I've been redoing bedrooms and having draperies and carpets cleaned, power-washing the sidewalk and patio, cleaning out closets and the rat-warren that is our basement. (Re-finishing the hardwood floors and redoing the bathrooms, plus tearing down and replacing the shed out in the yard are for next year.)

We are also getting new front doors, washing and painting the deck and replacing any old boards, grinding up the tree stump from the big tree that went down, removing a couple of dead trees, replacing the outside lights, plus a few inside ones, cleaning and caulking the glass sunroom, and fixing some broken gutters.

And all these people came and gave us estimates and we said, sure, start right away and they said we'll be there! and WE'RE STILL WAITING. The sunroom and gutters are half done, but the gutter that is sending all the water onto the patio is still DOING THAT. We haven't put out any deck or patio furniture because we'll just have to take it down again if they ever show up to paint. While we just picked out the outside lights this month, I've been waiting for the electrician to put up the inside lights SINCE NOVEMBER. He's here today, finally. I just hope he doesn't work today and then not come back until next month. He has chickens and every time he comes over, he brings us a dozen eggs, and he did some work in November he hasn't charged us for yet, and he's been our electrician forever, but still.

*sigh* It's just so frustrating, especially the deck. I'm ready to tell them if they don't do it the beginning of next week they can just wait until fall. All three kids and their SOs will be here over the Fourth, I want to use my deck.

Plus, Larry calls me every day from work to ask if anyone is here working and then he gets crabby and I'm tired of hearing him bitch, even though I'm equally as frustrated.

Anyway, not so dire as so many other people's problems, but still frustrating nonetheless. It's an old house and it needs these things done.

There's a bird feeder and a squirrel feeder next to the sunroom and Neville likes to run around and scatter the critters hanging around. The other morning he went tearing around the corner and there was a big-ass turkey and her three chicks. The babies were about as big as Nev and the mother turkey was about five times his size. She wasn't sure she was going to let him chase her off, but she finally flapped away. Wild turkeys are not especially graceful when they fly.

And then yesterday we went around the corner of the house to the backyard and came face-to-face with a deer. The deer was as surprised as we were, and dashed off before Nev could give chase.

We also caught a cardinal in the chipmunk trap, which Nev thought he'd be able to chase, and he had great fun trying to dig up a mole.

It's an understatement to say that Nev likes his yard.
