Fic title: We Will Organize Our Children
Author name:
withdiamonds
Artist name:
alchemise
Genre: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 43,000
Warnings: canon character deaths
Notes: Mostly pre-series, canon John/Mary, contains spoilers through 4.09. Which I think are all in the summary!
Summary: In 1973, Mary Campbell made a deal with a yellow-eyed demon. She made it out of grief and fear and ignorance, and it was part of a chain of events that was designed to bring about the end of the world.
In 2006, John Winchester made a deal with that same demon. He made it for love and with great faith. It, too, was a link in that chain.
In 2007, Dean Winchester made a deal with a different demon. He made it out of grief and love and desperation, and it made the end of the world almost certain.
In 2008, Sam Winchester tried to make a deal, with any demon he could find. He was driven by grief and despair, fueled by rage. It was a deal that almost surely would have stopped the world from ending, had he been able to find a demon that was willing to make it.
This is the story of the Winchester family.

More notes: The opening quote – "We will organize our children…and teach them to do in a perfect way the things their fathers and mothers are doing in an imperfect way…" is an excerpt from the first mission statement of Rockefeller's General Education Board called "Occasional Paper Number One (1904), first published in 1912 as an essay, "The Country School of Tomorrow."
The art is so wonderful –
alchemise went straight to the heart of this, even after just reading the first draft, which was only 20,000 words when she first saw it. Both pieces are exactly what I wanted, even before I knew I wanted them. Thank you!

So many thanks to
topaz119, who assured me this thing really does have a point and isn't boring, and also showed me how to make it better. She shares my love for Mary, and for John and their boys.
Also, there's no way I could have written this without the existence of the Supernatural Wiki. What an awesome place. I think I referred to it every five minutes while I was writing.
And, of course, thank you to
wendy and
thehighwaywoman for going to the enormous amount of trouble they do to hold this wonderful challenge every year.
