Okay, I wanted to think a bit before I said anything. So I thought. Here goes.

Three things strike me about Justin and the past year and some of the things he's said, including the RS stuff. The entertainment industry seems finally ready to embrace him and elevate him to the status of superstar, with all that entails, both good and bad. At the present time, I think that to legitimize that, media like RS needs to compensate by dismissing the other four members of NSync. This is the same magazine that gave them each their own cover, hello. In order to save face, they seem to think they need to say, hey, we may have accepted Timberlake, but no way does that mean we accept boybands or teen pop. They encourage him to distance himself from his past. I worry that he will let this influence him. He tends to tell interviewers what he thinks they want to hear. And let's face it, who among us would be able to withstand that lionization without becoming just a little cocky? I know I wouldn't. I want him to be proud of his accomplishments, past, present and future, not embarrassed by them. That's not fair to him, he's worked damn hard all his life and I hate to think he feels bad about any of it.

Secondly, a big reason that I'm here is for the fic. This is almost completely dependent on group dymanics, and I don't like anything that fucks with that in my head. If he distances himself from the other guys, that will make me sad. If he makes me think that he even for one moment regrets any part of his NSync experience, that will make me sad. And I sure as hell don't want to read a shitload of stories demonizing his character, or worse, apology!fic.

Thirdly, I've been around awhile, have been exposed to many diffenent musical genres. They are all legitimate. None of them have any more value than any other one. I hate country music with a passion. That doesn't mean it's not a legitimate, valuable musical genre. That doesn't mean the people who produce it are without talent or that its fans are stupid and shallow. Pop is neither nore nor less valid than country, classical, musical theater, or techno. Being an NSync fan has forced me to give this speech to more than one person, including my son. Justin's whole "Forgive me father, I know not what I did," makes me feel a little foolish. It makes me feel like I should defend teen pop to one of it's foremost perpetrators. I"ve defended his whole career to people and now he's made me feel kind of silly for doing that.

See, it's all about me and how I feel, not about Justin at all.
